Can pregnant and lactating women consume aspartame?

Yes. A task force of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Nutrition concluded that aspartame is safe for both the pregnant mother and developing baby. In addition, the FDA and the Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Medical Association agree that women who are pregnant or breast feeding can safely use aspartame.

Of course, it is important for all pregnant women to consult with their doctors regarding nutritional needs during pregnancy to ensure that they are getting adequate calories for growth and development.
